The mission of Second Chance is to provide compassionate, rehabilitative care to orphaned, ill, and injured wild animals, and to advise our community on helping animals.
Each year, concerned citizens and animal services officers bring Second Chance about 3,000 distressed native wild animals — songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, squirrels, groundhogs, chipmunks, bats, rabbits, turtles, and a host of other native species and migratory birds — for medical treatment, attentive care, and release.
Staff, interns, and volunteers often work 12 to 14 hours per day caring for patients during the busy spring and summer months. Our volunteer wildlife veterinarians oversee the animals’ treatments and perform surgery on-site, as needed. We thoroughly test the animals before they are released to ensure that they have sufficient skills to survive back in the wild.
We will continue following local county COVID-19 guidelines and regulations. Guidance is changing often so if you're unsure or have any questions, please ask at the entry booth and visit the Howard County COVID-19 site for up to date guidelines and regulations. https://www.howardcountymd.gov/health/covid-19
There will be water for horses available in the tank near the bathrooms. Please use this to fill your own bucket at your own risk. Make sure to bring a bucket for your horse.
Portapotty‘s are available on the grounds. There will be a disinfectant spray available to use before and after entering.
Please bring your own pitchfork and bucket to collect hay and manure from around your trailer. We will not have the pitchfork and wheelbarrow out for the public to use. If your horse poops in the parking area somewhere other than around your trailer you are still responsible for cleaning it up.
Parking at Schooley Mill is limited. Please ONLY vehicles with trailers attached should park in the gravel area. There is a parking lot at the top of the ring for all other vehicles.
